Travel Itinerary
Day 1: Mexico City
Arrival at Mexico City airport, transfer, and hotel check-in. Overnight.
Day 2: Mexico City
Breakfast at the hotel. Visit to the Zócalo of Mexico City (one of the largest squares in the world), particularly the Cathedral (the largest church in America). Continue to Teotihuacán (literally the “place where men become gods”), a sacred city for the Aztecs.
Arrival and visit to the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon and the Temple of Quetzalcoatl. Lunch at a restaurant. Afterward, return to the hotel with a stop on the way to visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Overnight.
Day 3: Mexico City
Breakfast at the hotel. In the morning, visit to the Coyoacán neighborhood, one of the 16 delegations of the Federal District, which was once a small village outside the city but, with the development of Mexico City, became an urban neighborhood, maintaining its charm with cobblestone streets, squares, gardens, museums, and beautiful colonial residences. The Frida Kahlo House-Museum will be visited, located inside the “Casa Azul,” where the artist lived during her youth and where some of her minor works are exhibited. Return to the Paseo de la Reforma area. Lunch at a restaurant. Afterward, visit to the Anthropology Museum, which houses artifacts and works of art from various pre-Columbian civilizations in Mexico. Return to the hotel. Overnight.
Day 4: Mexico City/San Cristóbal de las Casas
Breakfast at the hotel or packed breakfast depending on the flight departure time. Transfer to the airport and flight to Tuxtla Gutiérrez, the capital of Chiapas. Arrival and departure for Chiapa de Corzo, where a boat trip through the Sumidero Canyon will be taken, where, according to legend, in the mid-16th century, after a fierce resistance, hundreds of indigenous people chose to leap down the steep canyon walls rather than surrender to the Spanish. Lunch at a traditional restaurant. Afterward, transfer to San Cristóbal de las Casas, a city founded by the Spanish in 1528. This is where the renowned Zapatista uprising began in 1994. Arrival and hotel check-in. Overnight.
Day 5: San Cristóbal de las Casas
Breakfast at the hotel. The morning will be spent visiting the indigenous communities of San Juan Chamula and Zinacantán. The village of San Juan Chamula is home to the largest group of “Tzotzil” indigenous people and is the center of unique religious practices. Here, you can connect with the Christian and pre-Columbian traditions of the Tzotzil-speaking inhabitants. The city will also be visited, immersed in a peaceful colonial atmosphere. The main square, Plaza 31 de Marzo, is dominated by the Municipal Palace and the Cathedral, which was begun in the 16th century. It is one of the most beautiful cities in Mexico due to its harmonious urban composition, with imposing religious buildings. Afterward, return to the hotel and lunch at a restaurant. Free afternoon for individual activities. Overnight.
Day 6: San Cristóbal de las Casas/Palenque
Very early in the morning, departure for the Agua Azul Waterfalls. A short stop and breakfast will be made in Ocosingo at a countryside restaurant with a magnificent view of the surrounding valleys. Continue to Agua Azul and visit the beautiful waterfalls. The stop offers the opportunity to admire the waterfalls surrounded by tropical plants and lush vegetation. There will be a chance to swim in the natural pools at the base of the waterfalls. Afterward, transfer to Palenque. Arrival and hotel check-in. Overnight.
Day 7: Palenque/Campeche
Breakfast at the hotel. In the morning, visit to the Palenque archaeological site, a major ceremonial center of the classic Maya period, known for its beauty and the technical perfection of its architecture and sculptural decorations. Palenque is one of the most spectacular archaeological sites due to its location in the jungle. It is the oldest discovered Maya site; the famous and creative Maya architects worked on the construction of the beautiful royal tomb. Visit the Temple of the Inscriptions, the main building of the area.
Inside, the tomb of the great Maya King Pakal is kept. Facing the temple stands the Royal Palace, a majestic construction due to its architectural features. Departure for Campeche, a former colonial port, with a stop on the way for lunch at a restaurant where you can taste excellent regional meat. Arrival and hotel check-in. Overnight.
Day 8: Campeche/Mérida
Breakfast at the hotel. Departure for Uxmal and visit to the archaeological site considered one of the most beautiful in Mexico. Uxmal’s charm is enhanced by its location in the hilly Puuc region, which means “hills,” the only reliefs in an almost entirely flat peninsula. Of particular interest is the Nuns’ Quadrangle, the Governor’s Palace, and the Pyramid of the Magician. Lunch at a restaurant. In the afternoon, continue to Mérida and brief visit of the city, where the oldest part of the city is formed by a grid of perpendicular streets. At the center is the Zócalo or Plaza Mayor, with trees and a central gazebo for Sunday afternoon concerts by the band. Surrounding the square are the Government Palace, the Cathedral, the Municipal Palace, and Casa Montejo. Afterward, hotel check-in. Overnight.
Day 9: Mérida/Riviera Maya
Breakfast at the hotel. Departure for Chichén-Itzá and visit to the largest archaeological area in Yucatán, belonging to the Maya-Toltec culture. This center was the most important city in Yucatán from the 11th to the 13th century. The most important buildings are El Castillo, the Ballcourt, the Temple of the Warriors, and the cenote, the sacred well where human sacrifices were made. The majesty and grandeur of Chichén-Itzá are unforgettable. A place that exudes the charm of the bloody Maya history, from the temple’s steps, the place of death for sacrificial victims, to the sumptuous, almost obsessive beauty of the smaller buildings. In the afternoon, continue to the Riviera Maya and hotel check-in. Dinner at the hotel and overnight.
Day 10: Riviera Maya/Cancun
Breakfast at the hotel and transfer to Cancun airport.
